CASV Members Studio Visit with Gu Xiong

Join artist Gu Xiong for a studio visit and conversation exploring contemporary art practices rooted in research, collaboration, and lived experience. Gu Xiong’s multidisciplinary practice examining identity, migration, and cultural exchange in an increasingly globalized world. The visit offers a unique opportunity to engage with an internationally recognized artist as he shares recent work, creative processes, and perspectives on art.

 

Note: We will meet in front of the UBC AHVA Gallery, Audain Art Centre at 12:45pm and walk to the studio together as a group.

About the artist:

Gu Xiong is a China-born, Canada-based multimedia artist whose practice spans installation, painting, sculpture, photography, video, text, and performance. His work explores hybrid identity formed through migration and cultural integration, engaging themes of globalization, invisible labor, local culture, and identity politics through a multidisciplinary lens informed by sociology, geography, economics, and literature. Gu Xiong has exhibited extensively in Canada and internationally, with over sixty solo exhibitions, numerous major biennales, and public art commissions. His work is held in major public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the China National Museum of Fine Arts, and the Vancouver Art Gallery. He holds BFA and MFA degrees from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and is a Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia.
