The Contemporary Art Society invites you to join us in a collection tour of the Vancouver General Hospital’s Art Collection. There will be a reception following the tour, refreshments will be served.

In 2000, Vancouver General Hospital & UBC Hospital Foundation launched a program to bring visual art into our hospitals.  VGH has accumulated a respectable collection since that time, the collection was started with a single sculpture and 70 prints.

Today, more than 1,200 pieces by notable artists grace the walls of our hospitals, all donated by local artists and collectors. Notable artists in the collection include Jack Shadbolt, Martha Sturdy, Gordon Smith, Sylvia Tait, Gathie Falk, Scot McFarland, Stephen Waddel, Christos Dikeakos, Jock Macdonald and Richard Heikkila-Sawan.

Jim O’Hara, Vice President of Leadership Giving speaks of the Foundation and its program:

We are grateful to our donors for their contributions to this innovative program,” says Dr. Bev Spring, a physician with the Palliative Care Unit at VGH. “Art helps to create an atmosphere aesthetically and attitudinally where emotional and physical healing can happen. This is important for the heart and soul of the hospital – and the hearts and souls of those who find themselves on the giving or receiving end of care here: patients, their families and staff alike.
