In pretty boys kill me, I address the subtle distinction between desire and obsession, with soft-featured young men serving as muse. Through my drawings, I continue to reference both public and personal histories.

Process and object are both important in this exhibition. At the outset, I was interested in whether my drawing capability and the quality of the work would suffer because of the intense repetition. The show’s ambiguous title, pretty boys kill me, gestures at the project’s and my own masochism. Having drawn about 300 faces, I injured my right hand and was unable to draw for several months. To be sure, pretty boys kill me speaks to the deleterious effect of obsessive desire. Love becomes an inoperable illness that cannot be removed without destroying the patient. The drawings touch equally, however, on the enabling aspect of obsession, its ability to focus the senses and intellect in pursuit of its object.

Working in clay, paper, textiles (including non-woven vinyl), bronze and glass, the artists examine questions of labour, craft, skill and value while demonstrating how objects embody meaning and can speak to contemporary issues and narratives.

Our Art committee is busy planning the next Art in the Garden party for Sunday, June 9th in the Louis Brier Home & Hospital’s Shalom Garden. Last year’s event was a great success, and the creatively painted and decorated galvanized watering cans received rave reviews. Due to their popularity, the committee would like to feature them again this year. If you would like to be included as one of the artists participating in the event, please email the Foundation at foundation@louisbrier.com or contact our office at 604-261-5550 if you are willing to help us or know someone who can participate.

The watering cans are in our storage now, ready for pick up. Let’s make this year even more exciting than the last!

Wil Aballe Art Projects is proud to present a solo exhibition of current work by Saskatoon-based artist Sean Weisgerber. Since graduating from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2009, Weisgerber has produced a body of work in which specific modalities of abstract painting have articulated a singular fascination with the relationship between colour, form, material and perception. Typically, his paintings have been defined by opaque colours bounded by hard edges – an uncanny painterly dialect wherein human touch is modulated by a sense of the mechanical.

This exhibition sees Weisgerber’s works move away from precision execution, and the subject matter of abstraction and perception, with the mechanical appearing less in the character of the objects presented than in the process of their making.

In 2010 Sean Weisgerber founded 304 Days, an independently funded artist-run gallery in Vancouver. This temporary space showcased 30 artists over 13 exhibitions. Currently based in Saskatoon, his work has been shown recently at 330-G (Saskatoon) and Cooper Cole Gallery (Toronto).

CASV Board Member launches WAAP art gallery

Wil Aballe Art Projects (WAAP) is a new Vancouver-based commercial gallery, conceived to be both a private and public art experience. WAAP will showcase about a half dozen contemporary art exhibitions annually. As time passes, exhibition locations may vary depending on art being exhibited and availability of local space, in the true spirit of pop-up spaces.

The gallery is also dedicated to fostering a new generation of young collectors in Vancouver, primarily through publishing affordable editions by critically acclaimed artists. An oil on mineral paper painting edition by Weisgerber will be launched as WAAP Edition #1 in conjunction with the exhibition.

The future is already here

The future is already here: Alex McLeod and Brendan Tang, curated by Rachel Lafo for the Surrey Art Gallery, features a new collaborative work by the artist as well as their individual artwork. All are invited to Rachel Lafo’s conversation with the artists at 6:30pm, Saturday, January 19, preceding the opening reception. Rachel will lead a tour of the exhibition on Saturday, February 2, at 3 pm. The exhibition will be on view through March 24, 2013.

Monument to The Dry Exchange utilizes the shipping container as the site for alteration, transformation and intervention. The shipping container is a symbol of commerce and international trade, aiding directly in the production of great wealth, and designed to be filled with valuable goods to be shipped from port to port. Usually regarded as a humble laborer, the container has been transformed, dressed a rich and luxurious new skin.

Centre A is pleased to present TO|FROM BC ELECTRIC RAILWAY: 100 YEARS, a group exhibition celebrating the historic BC Electric Railway (BCER) building’s centennial anniversary, the current home of Centre A.

Sitting below the six-story Second Empire Renaissance styled building, the early 1900s saw the BCER terminal blossom into a bustling interurban railway station. Addressing the building’s importance to the collective memory of Vancouver, six contemporary artists will draw on the site and the neighborhood’s expansive history to consider the building’s significance as a cosmopolitan centre for new immigrants.

Katie Lyle, CASV board member, RBC painting competition finalist

Congratulations to Katie Lyle, just named one of the 15 finalists for the 2012 RBC Canadian Painting Competition.

Established in 1999, with the support of the Canadian Art Foundation, the prize recognizes emerging artists who are in the first five years of their artistic careers, and awards $25,000 to the winner and $15,000 apiece to two runners up.

Katie first became involved with the CASV as an intern, and then joined the board as Secretary in 2010, ending her term this May to dedicate more time to her art.  Katie’s 2011 piece, White Night, and 14 other final works will be on exhibit at the Power Plant in Toronto, will join RBC’s Canadian art collection, which currently holds more than 4,000 works, and are currently online at rbc.com/paintingcompetition.

The 2012 winner and honourable mentions will be announced in Toronto on November 29.

CASV member, Sean Mills, wins Arts Council of Surrey competition

Sean Mills was awarded 1st Place in the category of ‘Painting – Works on Canvas’ for Arts 2012, the 28th annual juried exhibition presented by the Arts Council of Surrey and Surrey Art Gallery. ARTS 2012 features more than 50 works by artists from Surrey and the surrounding region. Traditional imagery is juxtaposed with contemporary and experimental works including painting, glasswork, sculpture, photography, and fibre arts. The exhibition is on display at the Surrey Art Gallery until August 18th, 2012.

Pure Feeling

An exhibition by Sean Mills at Elissa Cristall gallery running from September 22 – October 22, 2011.  The reception will be on September 22 from 6 till 8pm.

Sean Mills graduated from Emily Carr University in 2010. The work for his undergraduate exhibition took more than 500 hours over a period of six months to paint. The painting is a grid composed of 3422 titanium white acrylic squares.

Andrew Dadson wins The Brink

Andrew Dadson is the recipient of The Brink award for 2011. The Brink is a biennial award granted to an early-career artist working in Washington, Oregon, or British Columbia whose work shows artistic promise and who appears to be on “the brink” of a promising career. Dadson will receive a prize of $12,500 and be given a solo exhibition at the Henry. A work of his art will be acquired for the museum’s permanent collection.
