Dr. Tim Moreton has been on the staff of the National Portrait Gallery in London since 1980. During this time he has been working for the most part in the Collections Department which is responsible for administering a range of conservation programmes and for building up the documentation for the Gallery\’s own permanent collection. This collection has been growing since foundation in 1856 and continues to acquire a substantial number of new works each year so, in addition to caring for the historical collection, the gallery has an increasing number of contemporary works to preserve and prepare for public display. For this lecture, Moreton shall explore some of the conservation issues that have been encountered and the questions to be asked in the exercise of our acquisitions policy which seeks to balance a strong biographical requirement with artistic quality. Moreton will present this through reference to about 15 portraits across the collection ranging from the 18th century to the present.
