Born in California and raised in Tehran, Babak Golkar has been living in Vancouver since 1996. He has been actively participating in exhibitions in North America, Europe and Asia since 2001. Golkar holds a B.F.A. from Emily Carr Institute and a M.F.A. from University of British Columbia. Alongside his art practice, he has been teaching studio courses at Emily Carr University to the Graduate and undergraduate candidates since 2005.
Golkar\’s practice spreads across diverse medium, ranging from drawing, video, performance, sculpture and site-specific installation; nonetheless, his interests in subjects and issues surrounding his practice remain constant. While employing engagement strategies such as humor and performitivity, subjects of his concept-driven projects centre on architecture, while revisiting specific Modernist models. A diverse cultural take on ideas is evident in Golkar’s works, a balance of Eastern and Western notions, while introducing new concepts from one cultural context to the other.

He has been researching geometric Persian Nomadic carpets for a series of projects, which use the carpets as blueprints for potential architectural models/developments. Recently, he presented different versions of these installations at the ArtBasel Miami and in group exhibitions at BrotKunsthalle, Vienna and Arario Gallery, New York.
