About the Exhibition:

Wil Murray | The Enemies of The Novel

Wil Murray is still haunted by author John Hawkes’ quote: “I began to write fiction on the assumption that the true enemies of the novel were plot, character, setting and theme, and having once abandoned these familiar ways of thinking about fiction, totality of vision or structure was really all that remained.” Applying a similar ethos to painting, Murray’s practice centres around the production of materials and paint strokes used in his large-scale three-dimensional planar paintings, multiple exposure collages and more recent hand coloured photographic works; all an exploration of painting’s ragged edges overlapping collage, sculpture, performance and photography are united for his first solo exhibition in Vancouver since 2009.Wil Murray was born in Calgary, Canada in 1978.  He studied painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design. His work has  been exhibited internationally, including The National Gallery of Canada, East and Peggy Phelps Galleries (Claremont, US) and Staatsgalerie Prenzlauer Berg (Berlin). Solo exhibitions include; ‘Please Boss Remember Me’, VITRINE Bermondsey Street, London (2014); ‘Die Welt in Farben’, P|M Gallery, Toronto (2014); Carte Blanche 2, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto (2012);  and ‘Last Summer I Build A 1:8 Scale Model of Your Vagina’, Staatsgalerie Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. His work has also been chosen for presentation in Future Station: The Alberta Biennial 2015 at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Canada. He received an honourable mention in the prestigious RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2008 and his work was recently featured in ‘The Painting Project” Galerie UQAM’s award-winning survey of painting in Canada. Murray also played in several notoriously loud and short-spoken experimental bands. He currently works between Canada and Berlin.

Passing of a Cherished Member – Friedel Mache

It is with deep sadness that the CASV wishes to honour the passing of Friedel Mache.  Friedel has been a devoted member of the CASV for 30 years.  Throughout that time, she and her husband Martin opened up their home and private collection many times to friends and members.  They developed several close friendships that endured for decades.  We will always fondly remember Friedel for her grace, style, beauty, quiet wisdom and most of all, for her genuine warmth and kindness.  Never one to chance missing anything that might be spectacular, Friedel and Martin loved to travel and went on every CASV trip they could over years.  Her friends fondly reminisce about art trips with her to L.A.and Mexico City, where despite a full day of tours, she went out dancing the night away with her friends.
I had the pleasure of meeting Friedel through mutual friends about 4 years ago at an art auction.  She immediately captured my admiration and we have been friends ever since.  Whenever I saw her, she exhibited the most sophisticated style, never overstated, and her favourite designer, Helmut Lang, soon became my own favorite.
This past summer, I had the great honour of having Friedel and Martin with us on the Paris CASV trip.  And while I promised her son that I would look after his parents, whenever things got stressful, it was she who would comfort me with her a few carefully chosen words and her motherly warmth.  Friedel never let on that she was ill and demonstrated an amazing strength and perseverance.  Even when we visited the FRAC collection in Madame Pommery’s 19th century champagne caves, she never complained as we descended a monumental staircase 70 meters underground, where it was freezing, and later had to climb the same steps upwards.  She was by all accounts, an inspiration.
Friedel Mache_2014 Paris Place de la Concorde
Friedel worked hard at her passion, supporting not just the CASV, but also the Western Front, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.  We are all better people for having known Friedel, a shining example of elegance, grace, dignity and kindness.  She was so proud of her family who have carried on her love and support for contemporary art and we wish them peace and comfort at this time of sorrow.
Good-bye our dear friend!

Purchase tickets at viff.org

Join Sarah Thornton as she explores the inner lives of contemporary artists in a lecture series about her new book 33 Artists in 3 Acts, which draws on hundreds of personal encounters with the world’s most important artists–from global superstars to unheralded teachers–to humanize and demystify contemporary art.

With Thornton as expert guide and trusted insider, this book offers readers unprecedented access to the lives of the artists, from late-night Skype chats with Ai Weiwei to taxi rides with Maurizio Cattelan. We join Thornton as she rummages through artists’ studios and solo shows, inquiring about everything from their bank accounts to their bedrooms. The result is a series of cinematic experiences which juxtapose artists in thought-provoking ways, and which build up narratives that end with epiphanies.

Sarah Thornton is the author of Seven Days in the Art World, an international best-seller translated into 16 languages. She has been the chief writer on contemporary art for the Economist and has contributed to many publications, television programs and radio broadcasts. She is also the author of Club Cultures and co-editor of the first edition of the Subcultures Reader.

A Canadian who went to Britain on a Commonwealth Scholarship, Thornton holds a BA in art history and a PhD in sociology. For more information about her, visit sarah-thornton.com. Check back for ticketing information soon.

LUCINDA LAB AT SEYMOUR ART GALLERY

Annie Briard and Kristina Fiedrich of Lucida Lab Collaborative would like to invite you to attend BLUR, at Seymour Art Gallery on March 9th, 2014.
The opening is scheduled for 2:00pm, with an artist talk at 3:00pm. Please join us for Lucida Lab’s inaugural exhibition; it would be our pleasure to have you as our guest.
Lucida Lab Collaborative is a recent collaboration of two Vancouver-based artists, Kristina Fiedrich and Annie Briard. Their partnership stems from a desire to have their perceptions confronted, mediated and sharpened by one another in order to find new possibilities for growth and transformation. Blur consists of a rich, interdisciplinary body of work comprising video, animations, photographs, drawings, sculptures, and assemblages. Each work is based on the collaboration’s guiding principles and desire to explore embodiment through the distortions and modifications of the crystal, as both form and metaphor.
The work conducted within the collaborative follows a strict studio-based methodology and set of rules which embrace distortion, reorganization, collection and getting lost.  The artists explain: “The focus of our recent work, both independently and collaboratively, engages with embodiment – the everyday attunement and experience of physicality – perception and the corporeal form. Through explorations of distortion, transformation and growth, we take up the representation and manipulation of the crystal and its habits as a means of examining bodily health, progress and metaphysical constructions of space.”
The crystal offers multiple viewpoints, refracted, distorted images, and divergent ideas. Alternatively, the crystal is also a means of focusing, narrowing and converging. Taking into consideration this dichotomous inward/outward lens, Lucida Lab embodies an evolution of growth, multiplicity and potentiality.

Or Gallery 30th Anniversary

2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the Or Gallery. This significant milestone provides the opportunity to reflect on the Or’s venerable history as a space for experimental art practices, and to bring an ambitious new project to light.

The Or Gallery is raising funds to purchase a residency and studio space that will provide a flexible programming venue for talks, readings and open studios. The project reflects an early moment in the gallery’s history: from 1983—1987, the gallery’s Franklin Street location featured an adjoining apartment, allowing a succession of artists to live in the space and curate exhibitions and projects. Building on this history, the multipurpose residency space will host visiting artists, curators and writers for short or long-term stays.

The success of Vancouver’s art community has hinged on tremendous local talent, bolstered by its ability to engage with art communities beyond its city walls. This project will supplement the Or Gallery’s programming and be shared with our peer organizations, providing an important asset to welcome a large number of visitors to work in Vancouver and establish lasting connections in the city.

You can become involved. We are raising money to match $100,000 in funds generously promised by the City of Vancouver, and we need your help! Please consider attending our auction, purchasing artwork, or donating online now.

Back Gallery Project Re-launched

Long-term CASV member and former Vice-President Monica Reyes has relaunched “Back Gallery Project”.  The original gallery was located behind the Monte Clark Gallery on South Granville and is now located at the former Gallery Fukai Space at 602 East Hastings.  Please visit http://www.backgalleryproject.com/ for more information

In October 2013 Back Gallery Project will be showing work by Holly Marie Armishaw.

Vancouver-based artist Holly Marie Armishaw works primarily in photography and digital imaging. Her work is generally based on the premise of creating photographs of the unphotographable.  Digital imaging allows her to create visual hypothesis of glimpses of metaphysical realities, psychological phenomena, projections of the future and to re-examine history.  For the past four years, these visual hypothesis have taken the form of petite vivid tableaux, often using theatrical self-portraiture and pictorialism to articulate her concepts.  These private performances designed only for the camera mimic the interior privacy of the mind further articulating not only her interest in metaphysics, but also of the private internal world of feminine existence.  Armishaw’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, and has appeared in numerous publications and university lectures.

Roselina Hung: pretty boys kill me

Gallery Fukai Presents: pretty boys kill me
Roselina Hung: Solo exhibition
April 6 – 27, 2013
Gallery FUKAI

In pretty boys kill me, I address the subtle distinction between desire and obsession, with soft-featured young men serving as muse. Through my drawings, I continue to reference both public and personal histories.

Process and object are both important in this exhibition. At the outset, I was interested in whether my drawing capability and the quality of the work would suffer because of the intense repetition. The show’s ambiguous title, pretty boys kill me, gestures at the project’s and my own masochism. Having drawn about 300 faces, I injured my right hand and was unable to draw for several months. To be sure, pretty boys kill me speaks to the deleterious effect of obsessive desire. Love becomes an inoperable illness that cannot be removed without destroying the patient. The drawings touch equally, however, on the enabling aspect of obsession, its ability to focus the senses and intellect in pursuit of its object.

Sean Weisgerber: After I Shed My Skin

Wil Aballe Art Projects presents
Sean Weisgerber: After I Shed My Skin
January 17, 2013 – March 9, 2013
Opening: Thursday,January 17th. 7-9:30 p.m. The artist will be in attendance.

Wil Aballe Art Projects is proud to present a solo exhibition of current work by Saskatoon-based artist Sean Weisgerber. Since graduating from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2009, Weisgerber has produced a body of work in which specific modalities of abstract painting have articulated a singular fascination with the relationship between colour, form, material and perception. Typically, his paintings have been defined by opaque colours bounded by hard edges – an uncanny painterly dialect wherein human touch is modulated by a sense of the mechanical.

This exhibition sees Weisgerber’s works move away from precision execution, and the subject matter of abstraction and perception, with the mechanical appearing less in the character of the objects presented than in the process of their making.

In 2010 Sean Weisgerber founded 304 Days, an independently funded artist-run gallery in Vancouver. This temporary space showcased 30 artists over 13 exhibitions. Currently based in Saskatoon, his work has been shown recently at 330-G (Saskatoon) and Cooper Cole Gallery (Toronto).
