Asphalt Layer, 99x150cm. Ed.7, colour photograph, 2002
Co-hosted by the Contemporary Art Society of Vancouver & the Contemporary Art Gallery, in conjunction with the CAG\’s exhibit Stephen Waddell.
The work in Stephen Waddell’s solo exhibition for the CAG goes back to 1995 to include the artist’s early paintings, photographic studies and films, all of which draw a direct line to his most recent photographs from 2008.
Waddell’s early paintings focused on anonymous urban spaces, usually unpopulated, lonely scenes. He used the camera to make studies for his paintings and these snapshots and Polaroid photographs lead him to take up photography full-time. Waddell also made Super 8 film studies of urban pedestrians that paved the way for his tableau-scaled photos of solitary figures seen from behind.
