Sometimes it seems like Vancouver is blessed by our safe distance from the world\’s many violent conflicts. While other artists must confront a dangerous world on a daily basis, Vancouver artists are capable of a kind of apathy that many of our international colleagues can\’t afford.
In this conversation about the role of the conscience in Vancouver art since the eighties, with a focus on the contrast between the city\’s dominant international figures and today\’s emerging artists, Lee will show a series of works that present the \”conscience\” as a subtle, but provocative reaction to the harsh politick of much contemporary art.

Lee Henderson is the author of the award-winning short story collection The Broken Record Technique (2002) and the forthcoming novel The Man Game, both published by Penguin Canada. He is a regular contributor to the visual arts magazines Border Crossings and Contemporary, and has written on numerous Vancouver and international artists. He has curated group shows for ZieherSmith in NYC and Bjornson Kajiwara in Vancouver.
