This event takes place on March 12th 2014 at 7:00pm at Emily Carr University, Room 410B, South Building 4th Floor.

Born in 1974 in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada, Kim Dorland pushes the boundaries of painted representation through an exploration of memory, material, nostalgia, identity and place.

Drawing heavily from the Canadian landscape and his affinity for the tradition of Canadian landscape painting, the loose yet identifiable scenes are interjected with areas of heavy abstract impasto, adding to the raw, fleeting quality of his canvases.

Dorland currently lives and works in Toronto. He attended the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver and received his Masters from York University in Toronto. He has headlined exhibitions in New York, Milan, Chicago, Los Angeles and  Toronto. His work has been featured and reviewed in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Modern Painters, Canadian Art Magazine and, most recently, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and Maclean’s magazine.

Dorland’s work is featured in prominent public and private collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal, the Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, The Oppenheimer Collection at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, the Neumann Family Collection, the Richard Massey Foundation, the Royal Bank of Canada and the Sander Collection in Berlin.
