Carol Sawyer is a visual artist and vocalist whose interdisciplinary practice includes photography, installation, video, performance, and improvised music. Since the early 1990’s her work has explored the connections between lens-based media and performance, memory, fiction, and history. Her work often employs strategies of montage or assemblage to build compellingly real-looking images of fictional objects, characters or spaces.
Recent projects include a series of seven short video works commissioned by the City of Vancouver Public Art Program titled Wood Work, based on archival film footage documenting aspects of the lower mainland’s lumber industry. Her ongoing series of photographs and performances, Some Documents from the Life of Natalie Brettschneider, traces the activities of a fictional historical performance artist.
Sawyer lives and works in Vancouver, B.C., where she has designed and taught courses in interdisciplinary studio, photography, and the history of photography at Emily Carr University and Simon Fraser University. She performs regularly with her improvising ensemble ion Zoo (with whom she has released two CDs) and in other ad hoc improvising ensembles and cross disciplinary collaborations. Her work is represented by Republic Gallery, Vancouver.
