Alison Yip was born in Calgary, Alberta and currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC. She graduated with a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design and has completed a Studio Residency at the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY.

Yip’s palette is largely muted, almost monochromatic at times.  Attention is brought to the textural qualities of the surface through thin washes of colour and areas of exposed linen or canvas. In addition to her paintings are drawings, some of which are portraits. These portraits are inspired by her practice of sketching in public places, particularly on the city transit where the only way to capture passengers candidly is from behind.
