In mid January, the CASV will host a members event at the Burnaby Art Gallery with Takao Tanabe.  The renowned Canadian artist will give a talk and tour of his exhibition, Chronicles of Form and Place: Works on Paper by Takao Tanabe.

Takao Tanabe has been an important figure in Canadian painting for over 60 years.  Born in British Columbia in 1926, Tanabe studied in Europe, the United States and Japan. Following a decade as head of the art program and artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, he returned to British Columbia in 1980 where he currently lives and works.

Tanabe’s work is in public and private collections including: National Gallery of Canada; Tate Museum, U.K.; Glenbow Museum, Calgary; Vancouver Art Gallery; Canada Council Art Bank; Art Gallery of Greater Victoria; Burnaby Art Gallery and Art Gallery of Ontario.

Takao Tanabe is the recipient of several honorary degrees and of the Governor General’s Award in the Visual and Media Arts.   In 2005, the retrospective Takao Tanabe was organized by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Vancouver Art Gallery and toured nationally.

This will be a retrospective exhibition of Tanabe’s work and will feature drawings and watercolours by the artist from 1945 to the present day. The intent of the exhibition is to chronicle the artist’s career through his drawing practice – often the starting point for paintings. The exhibition will examine, critically, how the artist has changed, adapted and/or reflected upon his subjects and the use of media to render a sense of “place” within his artwork. The exhibition is being co-curated by Darrin Martens and Ihor Holubisky (curator at McMaster Museum of Art).
