Kate Metten is an emerging interdisciplinary artist whose practice addresses the intersection between painting and ceramics. Her process centers around the materiality of clay and oil paint; how do these two materials relate or contradict one another? While investigating this question, she produces sculptural vessels that abstract historical forms and refer to her painting surfaces. In addition, Kate maintains a functional pottery practice. Metten holds a BFA from Emily Carr University and also studied at Concordia University in Montreal and Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. She received funding through the BC Arts Council’s Early Career Development Program to undertake a formal ceramic apprenticeship with second-generation potter Gailan Ngan. Recent exhibitions include The Thinking Eye, Burrard Arts Foundation, Vancouver and Untitled, WAAP, Vancouver.
