The Contemporary Art Society invites its members to visit Vanessa Brown’s studio this October. For those of you who are headed to Art Toronto and Feature Art Fair on this same weekend, you can still catch some of Vanessa’s work at Feature at Will Aballe Art Projects’ booth. Be sure to visit.

Vanessa Brown is a Vancouver-based artist who works in sculpture, painting and photography. She graduated with a BFA from Emily Carr University in 2013 and was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award. In 2014, she participated in The Universe and Other Systems with Shary Boyle at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Her recent exhibitions include Wil Aballe Art Projects, FIELD Contemporary, Gallery 295 and Erin Stump Projects. Her work has been collected by RBC and TD Bank. She is represented by Wil Aballe Art Projects.

I am concerned with how industrial materials and ideas of landscape enter my work through material energy. As someone whose art practice is concerned with sculpture, I am interested in re-examining modes of the heroic and the monumental. I work predominantly in steel and seek to parse the space between its associations with industry, weaponry and brutality, with its more subtle qualities such as pliability, versatility and slightness. – Vanessa Brown
